LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery for people with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and a combination thereof. It is by far the most popular type of refractive eye surgery performed throughout the world, with more than 1.1 million procedures were performed in the U.S in 2003, 1.3 million were performed in 2004 and 2005 and an estimated 1.4 million will be performed in 2006, based on data compiled by Market Scope, an eye care market research company.

Other studies also shows that at least 90% of patients achieve 20/40 or better visual aquity (20/40 is a fairly good vision in the U.S. as some states law considers it good enough for driving) and over 85% of patients achieve 20/20 or 20/25 visual aquity.

Although many people have undergone LASIK surgery to correct their visions, unfortunately it is not for everyone. Find out if you are a good candidate for it and of course, further consultation with your eye surgeon is necessary to determine whether you are a good candidate or not. Some requirements are you must be at least 18 years old, have healthy eyes condition (except common vision problems that you are going to correct), must have stable vision at least one year, not pregnant, and more.

If you are really interested in LASIK, before making final decision, make sure you understand the complications and risks and the costs also it is better for you to have a picture of the entire procedure, before, during and after surgery.

As with any surgery, LASIK is not a risk-free surgery. However, you can minimize the risk by choosing an experienced and competent surgeon. There are 50 questions compiled by eye experts to help you finding a good eye surgeon and some questions about costs that you must discuss with your doctor.

As technology evolves and improves, there are variations of LASIK such as Custom or Wavefront LASIK and bladeless LASIK that have been proved to bring better results in LASIK procedure.

And if you are not eligible for the procedure, don't worry. LASIK is not the only surgical procedure to correct your vision and your doctor will probably suggest another refractive eye surgery for you, such as PRK, LASEK and more.
